How it is made

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek front, spray painting works well and is finished before it reaches you.

Bed mechanism housing

The bed sits inside a cabinet built around its mechanism and fix it as the maker specifies. The front can look like a set of cupboards.

About our wall beds in Stratford

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a guest room that sits empty most of the time and more floor space in a studio flat.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Around Stratford, where many homes were built since 2000, it is part of every design visit. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Stratford?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Stratford (London) station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Will you provide a mattress for the bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can pick the right one.

Why people ask for wall beds in Stratford

In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.

Here’s what wall beds can help with:

  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

Living in a block of flats near Stratford (London) station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.

Bedrooms in Stratford: local notes

About 55% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Stratford went up since 2000, and about 19% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Stratford. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Newham sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Theatre Royal, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Sutton House, about 2.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Stratford is about 2 miles south-east of Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham.
