Fitted cupboards for homes in Tower Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tower Hill were built since 2000 (about 49%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Tower Hill is in the Tower Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Tower Hill. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Chapel of St Peter Ad Vincula, under half a mile east of the centre of Tower Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near London Fenchurch Street station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter ad Vincula, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Tower Hill

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. Most enquiries start with storage in a corner nothing else fits and storage for towels and bedding; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Tower Hill were built since 2000, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the cupboards painted to match a wall or the woodwork, hand painting on site works well and is easy to refresh later.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

To get a quote for fitted cupboards in Tower Hill, tell us about the room on our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Making good walls after other work
  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Tower Hill

I live near London Fenchurch Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Tower Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Tower Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How much time does fitting need?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
