Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Does a conservation area in or near Wembley affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Wembley?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
How long does fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Walk-in wardrobes in Wembley: what you get
A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that is for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. Most enquiries start with a calmer, clearer bedroom and room for two wardrobes in one space; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A large share of the homes around Wembley date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely have enough built-in storage for a bedroom. We design walk-in wardrobes around the window, the radiator and the door. In a managed block, the lift and delivery rules are worth checking before fitting day.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Think about long versus double hanging
- Talk to your electrician early about lighting
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Make sure walls are dry before units go in
Adjustable shelves can be moved as your clothes change, so the space keeps working. It’s worth a rethink each season.
Deal with any damp before the units go in. External walls can be colder and damper, so we allow for ventilation.
Wembley homes and walk-in wardrobes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 53% of the housing in the streets around Wembley, with about 30% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Wembley is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 46% of households in the streets around Wembley live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a flat close to North Wembley station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Preston Park? Walk-in wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For a family home near Wembley Primary School, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Could you do it yourself?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The width and height of the space
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
Before the design visit
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
- Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Arranging a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
