Bespoke kitchens in West Brompton: what you get

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Knowing the appliance sizes early lets us leave the right spaces, so everything fits as it should. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote. Most enquiries start with cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. With a large share of the homes around West Brompton dating from then, we check each wall before wall cabinets are planned. If a wall cannot take wall cabinets, tall larders or a dresser standing on the floor can do the job.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What we do not do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any work on the gas supply
  • Moving water or waste pipes
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers

Do you need bespoke kitchens in West Brompton?

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. Larders, tall cupboards and deep drawers can hold much more than a row of standard wall units.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose

For a flat near West Brompton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Made-to-measure kitchens in West Brompton

In the area around West Brompton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 70%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 12%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. West Brompton is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. So a van fitting furniture in West Brompton typically needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Close to Gwendwr Garden? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Garden Lodge, about 0.6 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke kitchen takes more planning than picking units from a range. What you get is a kitchen planned around how you cook and live. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in West Brompton

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in West Brompton?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and West Brompton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

I live near West Brompton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
