Loft storage in West Brompton: local notes

In the neighbourhood around West Brompton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 70%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of West Brompton, 21 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. In West Brompton, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near St Cuthbert with St Matthias CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Loft storage for homes in West Brompton

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. At the design visit in West Brompton, we will look at what fits. Most enquiries start with a dormer that isn’t being used and needing storage in a loft office, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around West Brompton are that old. Eaves cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for what you told us you’d store.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat does not do its job. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

What loft storage can’t fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out
  • Approval for structural changes
  • Structural changes, like cutting into rafters or joists

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near West Brompton station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in West Brompton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Eaves cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How fitting works for loft storage

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the storage is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That suits a room in daily use.
