Walk-in wardrobes for homes in West End

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. People normally come to us about hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and turning a box room into a dressing room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around West End, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so doors close square and the gaps stay even. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

Several things affect the price:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Your postcode and the borough

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Why people ask for walk-in wardrobes in West End

Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. We can design a dressing table into the room next to the hanging and shoe storage.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom
  • Room for two wardrobes in one space
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes

Close to St Anne's Churchyard? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Structural changes or removing walls

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bedroom storage in West End

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around West End, with about 21% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 934 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of West End. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in West End is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your children go to Soho Parish CofE Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in West End

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in West End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do walk-in wardrobes need ventilation?

Yes, it helps keep clothes fresh and damp away. We design the units to let air move, and any damp on the walls should be sorted before fitting.
