Fitted wardrobes in West End: what you get
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about no space in front for doors to swing and damp or musty clothes against an external wall.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around West End built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
- Building work to create a loft room
- Decorating or plastering the room
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How it works.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in West End
I live near Tottenham Court Road station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
My home in West End is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You send us a few details about the room and the storage you need, and we arrange a design visit.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- Your quote follows, with the layout, materials and finish set out, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
Preparing the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Keep pets in another room while we work

Fitted wardrobes in West End: local notes
About 49% of the homes in the streets around West End went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of West End, 30 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned in advance.
If you live near St Anne's Churchyard, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Giles in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Tottenham Court Road station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
West End is about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras, in the London Borough of Camden. Anywhere in West End, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Camden, large and small.
Every address in W1F, W1D and W1T is covered for fitted wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. If your home is on a street like Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bridle Lane, or close by, we can visit to measure up for fitted wardrobes. West End is near the A301 and A400, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Close by, we also work in Seven Dials (1 mile east), St Giles (1 mile north-east), Soho (1 mile west), Chinatown (1 mile south-west) and Covent Garden (1 mile east). Other parts of Camden we cover include Hampstead (4 miles north-west), West Hampstead (4 miles north-west), Agar Town (2 miles north), Kentish Town (2 miles north), Greenhill (4 miles north-west) and Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west). As one of the bigger places in Camden, West End is covered for fitted wardrobes and everything else we make.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work isn’t as quick as buying from a shop, because of the design visit, the quote and the making. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
