Walk-in wardrobes in Addington

About our walk-in wardrobes in Addington

Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. If you are living with a dressing area in part of a bedroom and the right mix of long and short hanging, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Some post-war homes have lightweight partitions between bedrooms, so tall pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back where the wall allows. Because many homes around Addington date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, we check every wall at the design visit. Nothing heavy relies on a thin wall alone.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

From workshop to your room

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It helps to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Plastering, decorating or flooring
  • Building work to create the room
  • Electrical work in the room

Not sure whether your space suits walk-in wardrobes? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shoe storage
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Dressing table
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

What affects the price in Addington

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How big the furniture is
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Addington

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Addington?

Yes. Addington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Addington homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 are the largest group in the streets around Addington, at about 96%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Addington. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 38% of households around Addington live in terraced houses, well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 23%, according to Census 2021. Terraces bring narrow halls and tight stairs, so walk-in wardrobes are made in sections that fit.

For families living near Applegarth Academy, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live in a flat close to West Wickham station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Addington Palace, about 0.4 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Addington is part of the London Borough of Croydon, about 4 miles north-west of Thornton Heath. We cover Addington as part of our work across Croydon, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Addington is one of 32 places on our list for Croydon.
