About our fitted home offices in Brompton

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. It is worth talking through during the design visit in Brompton. People typically come to us about an alcove or landing that could take a desk and working at the kitchen table, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Brompton are that age. That leaves room for shelving above a desk right up to the picture rail or cornice. Some internal walls in older houses are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the office in your home, trimming the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Before fitting day

Advice

Is it time for fitted home offices?

Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. A desk with doors, or an office in a spare room, lets you close the door on work. It helps the home feel restful after hours.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Flimsy shelves that will not take the weight
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Glare from a window on the screen

Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Fitted home offices in Brompton: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 69% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Brompton, with about 14% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 17 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Brompton. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That normally means a van in Brompton needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Near listed buildings like Church of Holy Trinity, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Brompton, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Brompton is within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, about 2 miles west of Kensington. Brompton is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Brompton is one of 13 places on our list for Kensington and Chelsea.

Postcode districts we cover here for fitted home offices: SW3, SW7 and SW1X. You will find streets here such as West Road, Hans Road and Eaton Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted home offices. Brompton is near the A315 and A3212; on busy main roads, unloading home offices takes a little planning. If you are just outside Brompton, we also cover Chelsea (1 mile south), Belgravia (1 mile north-east), South Kensington (1 mile south-west), Victoria (1 mile east) and Little Chelsea (1 mile south-west). We also make fitted home offices in nearby places such as Kensington (2 miles west), Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (2 miles north-west), Holland Park (2 miles west), Bayswater (2 miles north-west) and Kensal Town (3 miles north-west).

Local landmarks in Brompton

Well-known places in the area include Harrods (within half a mile north) and Berkshire & Westminster Dragoons Museum (within half a mile south-east). Open spaces near Brompton include Serpentine.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Ready-made office furniture comes in set sizes for straight walls. In an alcove, a landing or under the eaves, that leaves gaps and wasted space. A fitted home office is designed for the room and scribed to the walls. It costs more than flat-pack furniture, and what you get is an office that fits. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Questions from Brompton

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in Brompton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What materials do you use for home offices?

Our home offices are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Long shelves are sized to carry books and files without sagging. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Pricing fitted home offices in Brompton

What you pay depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking near your home
  • The internal fittings

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
