What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Walk-in wardrobes in Pimlico: what you get

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We plan the units with your electrician’s work in mind and agree the details when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are moving wardrobes out of the bedroom and a side each for a couple.

In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so the layout and the kind of door are worked out together. Many homes around Pimlico were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. We measure the space in front as well as the wall.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Practical tips

Getting the most from walk-in wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Talk to your electrician early about lighting
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Keep the room ventilated, especially if it’s on an external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units, so air can circulate.

Before the design visit, sort through your clothes. The amount of long hanging, double hanging, shelving and shoe storage depends on what you own, so it’s worth having a sort-out first.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for drawers and long shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Pimlico

In the neighbourhood around Pimlico, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Pimlico is in the Pimlico Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Pimlico normally needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

For a family home near Churchill Gardens Primary Academy, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St James The Less, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near London Victoria station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Pimlico?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Pimlico affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
