Brompton Fitted Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Brompton, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Too little room for clothes
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use

How we make fitted wardrobes for Brompton

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a room too narrow for hinged doors and dusty space on top of the wardrobe.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Brompton, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Too little room for clothes

If you live in a flat close to London Victoria station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from Brompton

My house in Brompton is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Brompton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Brompton?

It is easiest to message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in Brompton

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour, and it’s easy to refresh in future.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Brompton

About 69% of the homes in the area around Brompton went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Brompton, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Brompton is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near Hellenic College of London, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of Holy Trinity, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
