How we make walk-in wardrobes for Downham
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. People usually come to us about a dressing table with drawers and a mirror and somewhere for shoes to live, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Downham, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That is where walk-in wardrobes earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Walk-in wardrobes in Downham: local notes
About 72% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Downham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 11% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That usually means a van in Downham needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit. Terraced houses are home to about 42% of households in the area around Downham, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, both good spaces for fitted storage.
Living in a block of flats near Grove Park station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Bromley Palace, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near Rangefield Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Downham is part of the London Borough of Lewisham, about 4 miles north-west of New Cross. We cover Downham as part of our work across Lewisham, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our work takes in places right across Lewisham.
Every home in BR1, SE6 and SE12 is covered for walk-in wardrobes, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street like Shaw Road, Arcus Road and Brook Lane or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for walk-in wardrobes. Nearby, we also make walk-in wardrobes in Plaistow (1 mile south), Grove Park (1 mile north-east), Sundridge (1 mile south-east), Chinbrook (1 mile east) and Bellingham (1 mile west). Across the rest of Lewisham, our area takes in New Cross (4 miles north-west), St Johns (3 miles north), Deptford (4 miles north), Lewisham (3 miles north), Surrey Canal (5 miles north-west) and Sydenham (3 miles west).
Around Downham
We fit furniture in homes around Bonus Pastor Catholic College and Holy Trinity College Bromley. Downham’s nearest station is Grove Park station, roughly 0.8 miles north-east of the centre. Nearby you will also find The Glades (1.6 miles south) and Prefab Museum (0.7 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Downham Woodland Walk.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, in a finish that suits the house. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Downham
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The number of doors and drawers
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Before the design visit
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Any ideas or images you have saved
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- You get in touch and tell us about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
- We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
- A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
- The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Downham
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Downham?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Downham?
Yes, Downham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?
There is no single right answer. We can fit doors, open storage or both, and we go through the options when we measure.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
