Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sydenham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near Sydenham station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls, while leaving space to stand and turn. We will measure and plan it at the measuring visit.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through during the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Sydenham

You do not need a spare room to have a walk-in wardrobe. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that’s for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are the right mix of long and short hanging and storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe.

A bedroom used as a guest room, a study or a dressing room needs different storage. In Sydenham, as anywhere in London, we start by asking what the room is for. Then the layout, doors and inside fittings follow. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted, in a colour agreed with you.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Sydenham

Some want somewhere to sit and get ready. A dressing table with drawers and a mirror can sit within a walk-in wardrobe next to the hanging and shoe storage.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
  • A side each for a couple
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Room for a growing wardrobe

Near listed buildings like Church of St Bartholomew, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Sydenham, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Fitted bedroom furniture in Sydenham

About 40% of the homes in the streets around Sydenham went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Sydenham, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That usually means a van in Sydenham needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Sydenham station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Bartholomew, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Sydenham is part of the London Borough of Lewisham, about 3 miles north of New Cross. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Sydenham included. Our work takes in places right across Lewisham, large and small.

In SE26, SE20 and SE23, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets like Byne Road, Lucas Road and Cator Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want walk-in wardrobes or another piece made for the room. Close by, we also work in Penge (1 mile south), Crystal Palace (1 mile south-west), Sydenham Hill (1 mile north-west), Perry Vale (1 mile north-east) and Anerley (1 mile south-west). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places such as New Cross (3 miles north), St Johns (3 miles north-east), Deptford (4 miles north), Catford (2 miles north-east), Lewisham (3 miles north-east) and Surrey Canal (4 miles north).

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It helps to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Looking after your furniture

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Let air move through the space
  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Make sure walls are dry before units go in
  • Think about whether you want doors

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.
