Dulwich Village Walk-in Wardrobes

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make walk-in wardrobes for homes in Dulwich Village, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • Setting aside a corner of a large bedroom

Need walk-in wardrobes in Dulwich Village?

Is bespoke worth it?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a square room with a tight budget, a ready-made system may be enough. For tricky rooms, period homes or a built-in look, a bespoke design tends to earn its place. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, use our contact form.

Walk-in wardrobes in Dulwich Village: what you get

A walk-in wardrobe gives your clothes a room of their own. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, so it follows the walls and sits level. If your home has setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes, that is what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Dulwich Village date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

You choose the colour, and we apply it in the workshop.

Hanging rails

Hanging rails can be set for long or double hanging to suit your clothes.

Looking after your furniture

People planning walk-in wardrobes often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Think about long versus double hanging
  • Line up your electrician for any new lights
  • Have a clear-out before we measure
  • Think about whether you want doors

Once the units are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We fit the furniture once the room is ready.

Questions from Dulwich Village

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Dulwich Village in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes, Dulwich Village is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Southwark and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it is useful to be around at the end.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Dulwich Village

About 72% of the homes in the streets around Dulwich Village went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 54 entries within half a mile of the centre of Dulwich Village. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 25% of households in the streets around Dulwich Village, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

For a flat near North Dulwich station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live near Dulwich Park, walk-in wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Bell House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
