How we make walk-in wardrobes for Herne Hill

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we’ll go through it when we measure. If you are living with a bedroom without crowded wardrobes and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts, that’s what walk-in wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Herne Hill were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Questions we are often asked

My house in Herne Hill is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Herne Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and check how the units will reach the room. It’s useful to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Herne Hill homes and walk-in wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around Herne Hill, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. There are 39 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Herne Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Southwark included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Herne Hill. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

For families living near Judith Kerr Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a period home close to Saint Faith's, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in Herne Hill

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Electrical work in the room

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Couples sharing a wardrobe often want more space each. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so neither of you is squeezed.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom

Near listed buildings like Church of St Paul, under half a mile west of the centre of Herne Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
