How we make walk-in wardrobes for St George's Fields
A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. Where a bedroom is large enough, a section can be set aside with a partition or a run of units, with doors or left open. Any new partition wall is for your builder, while we make and fit the furniture. People normally come to us about somewhere for shoes to live and hanging for coats, dresses and shirts; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Around St George's Fields, where many homes were built since 2000, it’s part of every design visit. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

From workshop to your room
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it’s useful to sort them out in advance. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.
- We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home.
- We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Empty the space we will be working in

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in St George's Fields
Is St George's Fields in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?
Yes, we work across Southwark, St George's Fields included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in St George's Fields?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.
Before and after fitting day
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
- Think about where shoes and bags will go
- Let air move through the space
- Measure how much long hanging you need
New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners.
Talk to your electrician early about lighting. Wiring is their work, not ours, and it is easier to plan the units around it from the start.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Walk-in wardrobes in St George's Fields: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around St George's Fields, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 164 entries within half a mile of the centre of St George's Fields. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. All of London, Southwark included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in St George's Fields. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Old Vic Theatre, under half a mile north-west of the centre of St George's Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to Former Church of St Jude, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to St George's Cathedral Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
