Walk-in wardrobes in Southwark

Planning walk-in wardrobes for a home in Southwark? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Proper shoe storage
  • A use for a small spare room

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Southwark

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Southwark were built since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 17%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Southwark is partly covered by the Liberty of the Mint Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. About 81% of households in the streets around Southwark live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Close to Little Dorrit's Playground? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. For a flat near Elephant & Castle station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Southwark is part of the London Borough of Southwark, about 3 miles south of East Dulwich. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Southwark included. We cover places right across the rest of London.

We make walk-in wardrobes across the SE1 and SE11 postcode area. If your home is on a street like Borough Square, Trinity Church Square and Merrick Square, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for walk-in wardrobes. Main roads around Southwark include the A300 and B240. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Southwark: Tower Hill (1 mile north-east), City of London (1 mile north), Aldgate (1 mile north-east), Bishopsgate (1 mile north-east) and Barbican Estate (1 mile north). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover East Dulwich (3 miles south), Herne Hill (3 miles south), Camberwell (2 miles south), Peckham (3 miles south-east), Rotherhithe (2 miles east) and Surrey Quays (2 miles east).

The closest station to Southwark is Elephant & Castle station, roughly 0.5 miles south of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Surrey Dispensary (close by, under half a mile south-east) and Baynard's Castle (0.8 miles north). For a walk, there is Ludgate Hill.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Southwark

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. People normally come to us about a side each for a couple and the right mix of long and short hanging, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many homes around Southwark were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. In a compact bedroom, fitted furniture that reaches the ceiling and uses the corners makes the most difference. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • New lights or sockets
  • Building work to create the room
  • Painting the walls of the room

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Shoe storage
  • Dressing table
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels for a clean, even look.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Southwark?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Southwark?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, while any new walls are for your builder.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Southwark?

A spare room or box room that rarely gets used is another reason. Fitted out as a walk-in wardrobe, it becomes part of everyday life instead of a store for odds and ends.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A built-in dressing table
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • Shelves for shoes and bags
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 0.9 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
