Window Seats in Hendon

In Hendon, we design window seats around the room you actually have. We design your window seat at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books

Window seats in Hendon

Window seats in Hendon: what you get

Each window seat is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Hendon. If your home has a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and a bay window that’s hard to furnish, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Hendon, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Your postcode and the borough

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. Fitted seats stay with the house, and they make more of the window. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Common questions about window seats

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hendon station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make window seats for a home in Hendon?

Yes, Hendon is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the design visit.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

Often a mix works best. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We talk it through when we visit.

How is a window seat priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as we can while we work.

Hendon homes and window seats

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 45% of the housing in the area around Hendon, with about 20% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hendon. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Hendon (about 45%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bay windows are a feature of many interwar houses, and they suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church Hendon, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. For a flat near Hendon station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Heath Hall, about 2.3 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

How fitting day works

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat, including any radiator under it.
  2. We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you.
  3. You receive a written quote for the seat we have discussed.
  4. Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know about parking near your home

How to get a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning window seats often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit

If you are having a cushion made, we’ll give you the exact size of the seat. Let the paint cure before the cushion goes on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, use our contact form and tell us.
