Walk-in wardrobes in Kensal Rise

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Kensal Rise

About 53% of the homes in the streets around Kensal Rise went up before 1919, and about 13% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 129 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kensal Rise. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. The share of homes built before 1919 around Kensal Rise, about 53%, is well above the figure for Brent as a whole, about 28%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

For families living near Ark Franklin Primary Academy, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Evangelist, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Anglican Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Kensal Rise

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Full-length hanging takes coats, dresses and long garments, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. People normally come to us about a walk-in wardrobe in a box room and room for two wardrobes in one space; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Kensal Rise are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke walk-in wardrobe takes more planning than buying a system, and it costs more. In return, the layout is built around your clothes and your room. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Kensal Rise in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. Kensal Rise is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Kensal Rise?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. A section of the room can become a dressing area, open or behind doors. Any new partition is for your builder, and we fit the furniture.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • Building a new partition wall
  • Electrical work in the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Shoe storage
  • Dressing table
  • Birch plywood

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. We build the carcasses, shelves and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Doors and drawer fronts

A dressing table with drawers can be built in if the room allows.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels for a clean, even look.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
