Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the units are fitted. Marks are simple to touch in.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Ponders End

A walk-in wardrobe can also be part of a bedroom. A corner or one end of a large bedroom can become a dressing area, either open to the room or behind doors. Building a new stud partition is building work, so that’s for your builder, and we fit the furniture inside. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about proper shoe storage and a side each for a couple.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. A big part of the housing around Ponders End is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your clothes, shoes and bags and how you get ready.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the layout inside, including any dressing table.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the walk-in wardrobe.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

What prompts walk-in wardrobes in Ponders End

Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. A walk-in wardrobe can be planned with a side for each, so neither of you is squeezed.

People typically get in touch with us about things like these:

  • More space for clothes and shoes
  • Hanging for coats, dresses and shirts
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready

The wider area includes historic houses like Forty Hall, about 2.2 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the price in Ponders End

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Approximate measurements of the space

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Fixing the cause of damp
  • New lights or sockets

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Ponders End

About 35% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ponders End went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Ponders End is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Enfield is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Ponders End, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If you live near Enfield Town Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. If you live in a period home close to St Matthews Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions from Ponders End

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ponders End?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is a box room big enough for a walk-in wardrobe?

Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls, while leaving space to stand and turn. We check the room at the design visit.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
