Wall beds for your home in Ponders End

Wall beds in Ponders End

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, though any new sockets are for your electrician. If you’re living with a real mattress for visitors and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Ponders End, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the measuring visit too.

When is bespoke worth it?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Common questions about wall beds

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Ponders End station?

Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Ponders End?

Yes, Ponders End is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is a wall bed safe?

Wall beds are made for regular use as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. The mechanism is fixed securely to a wall or floor that can take the load, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do you supply the mattress?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We will go through those limits during the design visit so you can choose one that works.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

From workshop to your room

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

How to prepare

Why people ask for wall beds in Ponders End

Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A studio that works by day and night

The wider area includes historic houses such as Forty Hall, about 2.2 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
