How we make wall beds for Beckton

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. When guests come, the bed folds down. Typical reasons to get in touch are a flexible room for a growing family and a living room with a bed that folds away; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Beckton were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are compact flats in newer blocks. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the tricky corners. Boxing for pipes and risers is designed around rather than left as dead space.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Why bespoke in Beckton?

A wall bed is fixed to the house, so it stays when you move. How long you will be in the home is worth weighing up before you decide. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. It’s then assembled and fixed in the room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Why us?

  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Saturdays by arrangement

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made or what a quote should include.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily

The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

Check how the cabinet will get into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it helps to know about tight turns.

The problems wall beds solve

Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A home office that also sleeps guests

Close to Beckton District Park? Wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

What to check before you book

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Beckton homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Beckton were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 60%) and since 2000 (about 38%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Beckton include Gallions Hotel (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a period home close to St Michael and All Angels Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your children go to Gallions Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Beckton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Woolwich station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
