Wall beds in Wallend, Newham

Thinking about wall beds in Wallend? We start with a design visit and a written quote.

  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use

What affects the cost of wall beds

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Wall beds for homes in Wallend

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We will talk through what suits the bed during the design visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. Typical reasons to get in touch are a flexible room for a growing family and a storage wall with a bed inside, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Wherever your home in Wallend sits in London’s mix of housing, wall beds are designed for the room as it is. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and go through the design.
  3. You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it, for you to look over.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bedrooms in Wallend: local notes

About 34% of the homes in the area around Wallend went up before 1919, and about 34% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 12 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Wallend. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Newham has its own. Where a street in Wallend is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

For an older house near St John the Baptist's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 1.5 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live in a flat close to Barking station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Wallend is about 2 miles west of Plaistow, part of the London Borough of Newham. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Wallend included. In Newham, Wallend is one of the places we cover.

Design visits and fitting in E6, IG11 and E12 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets such as Hall Road, Quay Road and Ascot Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want wall beds or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Wallend include the A117. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover the places around Wallend: East Ham (1 mile south-west), Plashet (1 mile north-west), Upton Park (1 mile west), Manor Park (1 mile north) and Beckton (1 mile south). Other parts of Newham we cover include Plaistow (2 miles west), Stratford (3 miles west), Canning Town (2 miles south-west), Forest Gate (2 miles north-west), Greengate (2 miles west) and Maryland (3 miles west).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

What wall beds cannot fix

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Supplying mattresses

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

Why bespoke in Wallend?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. How long you will be in the home is worth weighing up before you decide. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Your questions about wall beds in Wallend

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Wallend?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

I live near Barking station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

How much space does a wall bed need?

That varies with the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, so we check it during the design visit.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes, that is a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.
