  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator

Window seats for your home in Beckton

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan window seats. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is normally all it needs. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The front edge of the seat is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Wipe away condensation from the window before it runs onto the seat. Keep the window ventilated in cold weather. Don’t leave water sitting on the painted surface.

Window seats in Beckton: what you get

Cushions are not something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. People usually come to us about looking for a reading spot by the window and a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. With many homes around Beckton built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Your questions about window seats in Beckton

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Beckton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Woolwich station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Which is better under a window seat, a lid or drawers?

Many seats use both. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We talk it through when we visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

What window seats can’t fix

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber
  • Plastering and decorating around the seat
  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Beckton include Gallions Hotel (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so the fixings for window seats are chosen for the board.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael and All Angels Church, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. Lift-up lids

With a lift-up lid, the whole space beneath the seat opens up. It suits blankets, toys and things you do not need every day. We make the lid to open and close cleanly.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for the frame, the seat and the drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.
