Wall beds in Canning Town
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. We check the wall and floor at the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If your home has a guest room that sits empty most of the time and a study that doubles as a spare room, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 sometimes have big windows that take up much of a wall, which leaves fewer walls for storage. That’s worth planning for around Canning Town, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Looking after your furniture
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Check there is room for the bed to fold down
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
- Allow space for pillows and duvets
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Your questions about wall beds in Canning Town
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Canning Town?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Do you cover homes near Custom House station?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, and we look at this when we measure.
Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?
Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
What we don’t do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Plastering or decorating the room
- Structural work to the wall or floor
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
Is it time for wall beds?
In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A real mattress for visitors
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
- A playroom that can sleep visitors
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
If you live in a period home close to St Cedd's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
Before you choose who makes it

- How the doors are hung and adjusted
What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so tell us what applies at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- First, you let us know about the room and how you’d like it to work. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
- You get a written quote for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
- We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Bedroom storage in Canning Town
Homes built since 2000 make up about 38% of the housing in the streets around Canning Town, with about 24% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Canning Town, Historic England’s list includes Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Canning Town. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
If you live near Keir Hardie Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
