Wall beds for your home in Blackfen
Wall beds in Blackfen: what you get
The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If your home has more floor space in a studio flat and a guest bed that disappears in the day, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Blackfen, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Blackfen homes and wall beds
In the neighbourhood around Blackfen, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 70%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Blackfen, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 47% of households in the neighbourhood around Blackfen, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
The wider area includes historic houses like Danson House, about 1.2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For a family home near Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Close to Shoulder of Mutton Green? Wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Arranging a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Common questions about wall beds
Is Blackfen in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London, and Blackfen is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
I live near Falconwood station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
We check that at the measuring visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Tips worth knowing
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
- Check mattress size and weight limits
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.
Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
