Bedrooms in Barking: local notes
About 39% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Barking went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Barking. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 28% of homes in the area around Barking date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.
Close to Mayesbrook Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 0.1 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If your home is one of the older houses near St Patrick's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Wall beds in Barking: what you get
Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. People normally come to us about a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and hiding the bed when it’s not in use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a compact bedroom, the swing of hinged doors can clash with the bed, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Around Barking, many homes date from 2000 onwards, and newer bedrooms tend to be on the small side. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Is bespoke worth it?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

How fitting works for wall beds
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.
- You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made at our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Arranging a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Electrical work for reading lights
- Strengthening or rebuilding a wall
- Supplying mattresses
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it

- Spray-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Moisture-resistant MDF

Questions from Barking
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?
Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barking?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
How much does a wall bed cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Looking after your furniture
Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Think about where extra bedding will go
- Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
New paintwork takes a while to harden. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.
Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.
