Wall beds in Becontree: what you get
The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. Typical reasons to get in touch are a storage wall with a bed inside and a playroom that can sleep visitors, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage typically goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Becontree, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for wall beds
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- We start with what the room is for, day and night.
- At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and go through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
- We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know about parking near your home
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them day after day. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Becontree
In the area around Becontree, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 76%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Becontree, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Terraced houses are home to about 51% of households in the area around Becontree, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, both good spaces for fitted storage.
For a flat near Chadwell Heath station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live in a period home close to St George's, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Your questions about wall beds in Becontree
Is Becontree in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes. We cover all of Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London, and Becontree is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do you cover homes near Chadwell Heath station?
Yes, homes across Barking and Dagenham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.
Is a wall bed safe?
Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and the maker’s guidance on use should always be followed.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
What it’s made from
Shelves
A few open shelves beside the bed break up a run of doors.
Hand-painted finish
Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish that suits older homes.
