About our bespoke kitchens in Custom House

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If your home has extra cupboard space and cabinets built around the appliances you choose, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Many homes around Custom House have been built since 2000, and in newer homes the kitchen is typically part of an open-plan room. Cabinets can be designed for the open space, with an island if the room allows. Stud walls need wall cabinets fixed into the studs or with suitable fixings.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Why bespoke in Custom House?

There is a place for both. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. For period homes, awkward rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing

Practical tips

Getting the most from bespoke kitchens starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • List what needs a home in the kitchen
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Allow space to walk round an island

We adjust the doors and drawers as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Think about how the cabinets will get in. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.

What bespoke kitchens cannot fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber
  • Building work, like removing walls
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Custom House

Homes built since 2000 make up about 64% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Custom House, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Custom House, Historic England’s list includes Warehouse K (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Warehouse W (Grade II), under half a mile west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Purpose-built flats are home to about 74% of households in the area around Custom House, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For an older house near St Matthew's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. For a family home near St Joachim's Catholic Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. Queen's House, about 2.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Custom House is part of the London Borough of Newham, about 1 mile north of Plaistow. Design visits and fitting in Custom House can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. In Newham, Custom House is one of the places we cover.

In E16 and E13, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Tree Road, Ethel Road and Booth Road, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for bespoke kitchens. Custom House is near the A1020; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. We also cover West Silvertown (1 mile south-west), Silvertown (1 mile south), Canning Town (1 mile north), Royal Docks (1 mile east) and Limmo Peninsula (1 mile west). Across the rest of Newham, our area takes in Stratford (3 miles north-west), Forest Gate (3 miles north), East Ham (2 miles north-east), Upton Park (2 miles north), Maryland (3 miles north-west) and Upton (2 miles north).

Around Custom House

Around Custom House, we cover homes near Royal Docks Academy, The Connaught Tavern and The Royal Docks Community School, among other places. There’s a railway station in Custom House itself: Custom House station. Well-known places in the area include Albert Dock Seamen's Hospital (0.5 miles north-east) and Charlton Athletic Museum (1.5 miles south). Green spaces nearby include Gilbert's Pit.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Custom House?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Custom House?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No, that work is for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How we price bespoke kitchens

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
