Wall beds for homes in Walham Green
In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. By day, the room is a living space, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above to make the most of the wall. If you’re living with shelves or a desk around the bed and a bed that fills a little-used room, wall beds made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Older bedrooms usually have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Walham Green date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
Ready-made wall bed units are available and usually cost less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Walham Green

Walham Green homes and wall beds
About 54% of the homes in the streets around Walham Green went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Walham Green, 16 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Walham Green, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1 mile north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to William Parnell Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

FAQs: wall beds in Walham Green
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Walham Green?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Walham Green?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Wall beds are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What happens during the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
That depends on the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
What wall beds cannot fix
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Supplying mattresses
- Making good the walls after other work
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Hand-painted finish
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Spray-painted finish
Pricing wall beds in Walham Green
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Parking near your home
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
How fitting works for wall beds
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
How to prepare
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
How to get a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
