Wall beds for your home in West Hendon
How we make wall beds for West Hendon
You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. If you are living with a playroom that can sleep visitors and room for a desk and a guest bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Many homes around West Hendon date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, giving the front a smooth finish.
Hand-painted finish
If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, and for occasional guests that may be enough. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which matters in a small room. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
- We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice
Questions we are often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Hendon?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hendon station?
Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We will explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Wall beds in West Hendon: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 38% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Hendon, with about 35% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Hendon, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in West Hendon is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
Near listed buildings like Church of the Holy Innocents, under half a mile west of the centre of West Hendon, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a flat near Hendon station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to St Matthias the Apostle church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Think about where extra bedding will go
- Think about how often the bed will be used
The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.
Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism as well as the storage around it.
