How we make wall beds for The Burroughs
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a home office that also sleeps guests and more floor space in a studio flat.
A good part of the housing around The Burroughs is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

FAQs: wall beds in The Burroughs
Do you make wall beds for homes in The Burroughs?
Yes, The Burroughs is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in The Burroughs?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Can a wall bed go on any wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Heath Hall, about 2.6 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Hendon station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

What it is made from
Bed mechanism housing
The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the bed size you choose.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it is fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
- The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Ask for a quote
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Related advice
Flats, leases and landlords
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.
Tips worth knowing
People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Think about how often the bed will be used
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Let us know about the wall’s construction
Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on your lease.
