Walk-in wardrobes in Monks Orchard: what you get

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. It can be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom, with hanging rails, shelving and drawers planned around what you own. We make it all in our workshop and fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. If you’re living with somewhere for shoes to live and a use for a small spare room, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Monks Orchard, bedrooms are often straightforward shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. If the loft has been converted, sloping ceilings bring their own options.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. You get a written quote for the design we’ve agreed, for you to read through.
  4. The units are made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

Sometimes a house changes and a room becomes spare. Many people choose to fit it out as a dressing room.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Somewhere for shoes to live
  • A built-in dressing table
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes
  • Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom

For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Monks Orchard

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monks Orchard?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live near Elmers End station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A box room with rails and shelves and a full dressing room with drawers and a dressing table are very different jobs, so we quote once we have measured. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, while any new walls are for your builder.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Is bespoke worth it?

There’s a place for both. For a simple space, off-the-shelf can do the job. Where the room is awkward or you want it to feel built in, bespoke is typically the better fit. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
