Built-in bookshelves for homes in Monks Orchard

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Monks Orchard were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 42%) and before 1919 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. About 51% of households in the area around Monks Orchard live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Monks Orchard is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a flat near Elmers End station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Monks Orchard is about 3 miles north-west of Thornton Heath, in the London Borough of Croydon. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Monks Orchard is part of that. Monks Orchard is one of the places in Croydon where we make built-in bookshelves.

In CR0, SE25 and CR9, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Built-in bookshelves in Monks Orchard: what you get

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Most enquiries start with empty alcoves that could hold books and bowing shelves in an old bookcase; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of built-in bookshelves are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Monks Orchard, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Monks Orchard

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Monks Orchard?

Yes, Monks Orchard is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Croydon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monks Orchard?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
