  • No wardrobe that fits under the slope
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • A dormer that isn’t being used

Loft storage in Monks Orchard

Loft storage in Monks Orchard

The space behind the knee wall typically has insulation and ventilation to think about. We design the storage so it does not block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. We look at this at the design visit in Monks Orchard. We make eaves cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about furniture that can’t get up to the loft and a boarded loft with no proper shelving.

A good part of the housing around Monks Orchard is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

What loft storage can’t fix

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Any work on the structure of the house
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Approval for structural changes

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Sloped wardrobe tops
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and discuss the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Let us know about parking near your home

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges around handles are touched most.

Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

Common questions about loft storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monks Orchard?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Is Monks Orchard in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Monks Orchard is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. We size every section for the tightest turn, and the pieces are put together in the room.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

What affects the cost of loft storage

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Loft storage in Monks Orchard: local notes

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it. Close to Ashburton Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.
