How we make wall beds for Woodside Park
A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way when the bed is down. People usually come to us about a studio that works by day and night and a spare room that’s rarely slept in; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check during the design visit and choose fixings for each one. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Wall beds for homes in Woodside Park
In the streets around Woodside Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 29%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Woodside Park, Historic England’s list includes Lodge to Finchley Catholic High School (Grade II), under half a mile north, and Terrace Cottage Terrace House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Heath Hall, about 3 miles south. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. If your children go to Northside Primary School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Woodside Park is about 1 mile south of Finchley, part of the London Borough of Barnet. Design visits and fitting in Woodside Park can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across Barnet, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Common questions about wall beds
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Woodside Park?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Woodside Park?
Yes. Woodside Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.
How much time does fitting need?
How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.
Honest limits
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Structural work to the wall or floor
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What prompts wall beds in Woodside Park
The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and folding it away gives the room a second life.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- A study that doubles as a spare room
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
- A flexible room for a growing family
For an older house near Saint Barnabas' Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
How it is made
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
- We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- The cabinet is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
