Wall beds in North Finchley

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a home office that also sleeps guests and a spare room that’s rarely slept in.

Wherever your home in North Finchley sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. Shelves, drawers and any hanging are arranged around your things.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Tell us what the wall is made of if you know
  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Think about the route into the room. We make the cabinet in sections that fit up the stairs and through the doors, so it is useful to know about tight turns.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

Preparing the room

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

FAQs: wall beds in North Finchley

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Finchley?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make wall beds for a home in North Finchley?

Yes, we work across Barnet, North Finchley included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.

What prompts wall beds in North Finchley

Working from home has changed how many spare rooms are used. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a fold-down bed lets it do both.

Wall beds can help with:

  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Coachhouse Between Number 34 and 36, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

How to choose a carpenter in London

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and usually cost less, and they can work in a simple space. They come in set sizes and finishes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

What you get with us

  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Over 300 projects completed
