How we make wall beds for Osidge
A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a study that doubles as a spare room and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.
Around Osidge, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
- Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
New paintwork takes a while to harden. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.
Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it during the design visit too.

Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, giving the front a smooth finish.
Pricing wall beds in Osidge
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Parking near your home
- How square the room is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Before the design visit
Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:
- How you want to use the space
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
How fitting works for wall beds
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You tell us about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Empty the space we will be working in

We check that at the measuring visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Bedrooms in Osidge: local notes
In the area around Osidge, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Osidge, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 41% of households in the area around Osidge, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
For a flat near Oakleigh Park station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, about 0.6 miles west of the centre of Osidge, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For a family home near Monkfrith Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
