Wall beds in Redbridge: what you get

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space, and at night it becomes a bedroom. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet to make the most of the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are a flexible room for a growing family and a home office that also sleeps guests, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Redbridge, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That is where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What we do not do

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Choosing a mattress for you
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions from Redbridge

Can you make wall beds for a home in Redbridge?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near Ilford station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

The problems wall beds solve

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side make the whole wall useful.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

Valentines Mansion, about 0.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and discuss the bed, shelves and desk.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

Redbridge homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Redbridge were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 64%) and before 1919 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Redbridge, Historic England’s list includes Steward's Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St Andrew (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than half of the homes in the streets around Redbridge (about 64%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

Close to Valentines Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. For a flat near Ilford station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
