How we make wall beds for Aldersbrook

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet to make the most of the wall. People usually come to us about storage built around a fold-down bed and a real mattress for visitors, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Aldersbrook, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Wall beds for homes in Aldersbrook

In the neighbourhood around Aldersbrook, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Aldersbrook is in the Aldersbrook Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Terraced houses are home to about 35% of households in the streets around Aldersbrook, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

For families living near Aldersbrook Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, about 0.5 miles north of the centre of Aldersbrook, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Make sure the floor in front is clear before the bed comes down, and don’t let children play with it.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Common questions about wall beds

Is Aldersbrook in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Aldersbrook is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Aldersbrook?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Is it time for wall beds?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side make the whole wall useful.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • Storage built around a fold-down bed
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

For an older house near Church of St Gabriel, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
