Wall beds in Goodmayes
We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room does not read as a bedroom by day. People usually come to us about a guest bed that disappears in the day and a living room with a bed that folds away; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around Goodmayes is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.
A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

How fitting day works
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts with a short note from you.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Arranging a design visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Advice
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
What affects the price in Goodmayes
What you pay depends on:
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Parking near your home
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
What to send when you contact us
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Your postcode and the borough
For a quote for wall beds in Goodmayes, send us a few details through our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough measurements. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
Goodmayes homes and wall beds
In the streets around Goodmayes, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 35%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Goodmayes include Church of All Saints (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 36% of homes in the neighbourhood around Goodmayes date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.
The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 2.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. Close to South Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window. For a family home near Goodmayes Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.
Bed mechanism housing
The housing has to be strong and square, so it’s built from sturdy board. It is fixed into a wall or floor that can take the load.
What wall beds can’t fix
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Making good the walls after other work
- Supplying mattresses
- Wiring for lights or chargers
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

- Hand-painted finish

Questions from Goodmayes
Is parking a problem for fitting in Goodmayes?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Goodmayes station?
Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you supply the mattress?
The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits at the measuring visit, so you can choose with confidence.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
