Wall beds for homes in Sydenham Hill

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a playroom that can sleep visitors and a study that doubles as a spare room.

Post-war bedrooms often have a wide window with a radiator underneath, so storage usually goes on the walls beside or opposite. Around Sydenham Hill, many homes date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so it is a layout worth planning for. Furniture is kept clear of the radiator so the heat reaches the room.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, with children kept well back while it moves.

Let us know what the wall is made of if you know. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard need different fixings, and we check it at the measuring visit too.

Common questions about wall beds

Do you cover homes near Sydenham Hill station?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Sydenham Hill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet for books, boxes or display.

Birch plywood

Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. The way in is still measured, along with the room. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

What affects the price in Sydenham Hill

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. The written quote follows the visit.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Structural work to the wall or floor

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish

Fitted bedroom furniture in Sydenham Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Sydenham Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 48%) and before 1919 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Sydenham Hill include Church of St Bartholomew (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east, and Beltwood House (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 53% of households in the area around Sydenham Hill live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Close to Long Meadow? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Philip the Apostle, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
