Loft storage in Sydenham Hill
About our loft storage in Sydenham Hill
A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Sydenham Hill, we’ll look at what fits. If your home has furniture that can’t get up to the loft and clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Around Sydenham Hill, where many homes date from the post-war decades, you may have wide windows with radiators underneath. A window seat there needs a grille or an open front so the heat still reaches the room. Fitted storage can also use the hall, the landing or the space below the stairs.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting works for loft storage
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.
- It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft.
- At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- Your storage is made in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.
Before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Common questions about loft storage
Is parking a problem for fitting in Sydenham Hill?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
Do you work outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How is loft storage priced?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.
Fitted storage in Sydenham Hill
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Sydenham Hill, with about 19% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Sydenham Hill, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Bartholomew (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east, and Beltwood House (Grade II), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Southwark included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Sydenham Hill, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. Close to Long Meadow? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Wherever you are in Sydenham Hill, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Flat-pack or bespoke?
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Is it time for loft storage?
Some people want to make more of a dormer. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It uses space that is otherwise empty.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A converted loft with no fitted furniture
- Low eaves that nobody can use
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- Unused space in a dormer
If you live in a period home close to Church of St Philip the Apostle, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
