Wall beds for your home in Kingsbury
How we make wall beds for Kingsbury
Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If your home has a real mattress for visitors and more floor space in a studio flat, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A bedroom in a house from between the wars typically has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around Kingsbury, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made at our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Arranging a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits parts that carry load. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it’s fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.

Your questions about wall beds in Kingsbury
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Kingsbury?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Kingsbury in the area you cover for wall beds?
Yes. Kingsbury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes, and it is one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.
Kingsbury homes and wall beds
In the streets around Kingsbury, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 77%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Kingsbury is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
Living in a block of flats near Hendon station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near Kingsbury Green Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Why people ask for wall beds in Kingsbury
Lots of spare rooms have become home offices. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Storage built around a fold-down bed
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
- A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
- A guest bed that disappears in the day
If you live near Roe Green Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
