What we don’t do

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Electrical work for reading lights
  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Making good the walls after other work

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside

How we make wall beds for Tufnell Park

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. Most enquiries start with a flexible room for a growing family and hiding the bed when it’s not in use, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

With a large share of homes around Tufnell Park built before 1919, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit wall beds and other fitted storage well.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. The mechanism should only be adjusted as its maker allows.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Why bespoke in Tufnell Park?

A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Questions we’re often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Tufnell Park?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Tufnell Park?

Yes. Tufnell Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What does a wall bed cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the room. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is a wall bed safe?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies, and you keep the space in front clear and children away while it moves.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Wall beds in Tufnell Park: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 56% of the housing in the streets around Tufnell Park, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Tufnell Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary Brookfield (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and Church of St Luke (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Islington included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Tufnell Park. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If your children go to Eleanor Palmer Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Close to Whittington Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Living in a block of flats near Upper Holloway station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
