How we make wall beds for Holloway

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above, so the whole wall works hard. People usually come to us about a guest bed that disappears in the day and a real mattress for visitors, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around Holloway, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Advice on your lease

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Make sure the floor in front is clear before the bed comes down, and do not let children play with it.

Tell us what the wall is made of if you know. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.

Bedrooms in Holloway: local notes

In the area around Holloway, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 52%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Holloway. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 50% of households in the neighbourhood around Holloway, based on Census 2021. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For families living near Grafton Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. The wider area includes historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 1.7 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Odeon Cinema, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Your questions about wall beds in Holloway

My home in Holloway is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Holloway?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. The design keeps clear space in front for the bed to fold down.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

Shelves

Open shelves soften a wall of cupboards and keep it from feeling heavy.

Bed mechanism housing

The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the mattress it takes.
