Wall beds for homes in Clerkenwell

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are more floor space in a studio flat and a spare room that’s rarely slept in.

With most households around Clerkenwell in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. A mansion block bedroom may have a chimney breast, high ceilings and walls that aren’t straight, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls. The fixings are chosen for whichever wall you have.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

  • Advice on your lease

Questions from Clerkenwell

Does a conservation area in or near Clerkenwell affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Farringdon station?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How are wall beds priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

Wall beds are made for regular use when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A bespoke wall bed takes more planning than buying a unit online. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners, leaving more floor clear.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

When is bespoke worth it?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Looking after your furniture

People planning wall beds often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Keep children away while the bed moves

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
