Wall beds in Three Mills

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it’s time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, such as a spare room that’s also a study. We make the cabinet for your room and finish it to match. If your home has a living room with a bed that folds away and a home office that also sleeps guests, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many newer homes have tall windows or full-height glazing in the bedroom, which leaves fewer walls for storage. That’s worth planning for around Three Mills, where many homes date from 2000 onwards, so we make the most of the walls you have. Corner sections are planned so nothing is wasted.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • How you want to use the space

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Bedrooms in Three Mills: local notes

In the streets around Three Mills, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 56%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Three Mills include Tide Mill (known As the House Mill) (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west, and Church of St Mary Stratford Bow (Grade II*), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 8% of homes around Three Mills were built before 1919, well below the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 2.4 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check mattress size and weight limits

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. A spray finish wipes clean and stays smooth and even.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.

Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in Three Mills. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ham station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?

Yes, that is a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Is it time for wall beds?

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
