How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Wall beds in Mill Meads

We fit wall beds in Mill Meads and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, then a quote in writing. The cabinets are built in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know beforehand. If you are living with room for a desk and a guest bed and a bed that fills a little-used room, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A large number of homes around Mill Meads date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats with compact bedrooms. Small rooms suit fitted furniture that uses the full height and the awkward corners. Boxed-in pipes and service risers can be built around, so nothing is wasted.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What wall beds can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Electrical work for reading lights
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Mill Meads?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Mill Meads in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Newham, Mill Meads included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Is a wall bed safe?

A secure fixing and careful use are what matter. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bedroom storage in Mill Meads

About 56% of the homes in the area around Mill Meads went up since 2000, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The National Heritage List has 47 entries within half a mile of the centre of Mill Meads. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Newham are set locally. Depending on your street in Mill Meads, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to West Ham station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near East London Science School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting suits a cabinet that should match the room’s woodwork.

Birch plywood

For a sturdy cabinet, birch plywood is a good choice around a moving bed.

The problems wall beds solve

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • Room for a desk and a guest bed
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A living room with a bed that folds away

If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
