Window seats in Stratford: what you get
We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Stratford and fitted. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a recess under the window doing nothing and an empty bay that doesn’t get used.
A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, which leaves little wall for storage. With many homes around Stratford built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf benches are made for straight walls and square corners, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves awkward gaps. A seat made for the window follows every angle. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Why us?
- Built around your room
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Let us know about the radiator before we visit
- Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
- Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
- Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
Wiping the seat with a soft, damp cloth is normally all it needs. Dry it afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The front edge picks up marks first.
Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly.

FAQs: window seats in Stratford
My home in Stratford is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make window seats for homes in Stratford?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Stratford is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

Getting a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.
What we don’t do
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Painting the walls of the bay
- Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
- Work on the window frame or glass
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.
What goes into it
- Radiator grilles
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Lift-up lids or drawers
- Spray-painted finish
Making use of awkward spaces in Stratford
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Stratford were built since 2000 (about 55%) and before 1919 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Stratford, Historic England’s list includes The Theatre Royal (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and University House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Purpose-built flats are home to about 67% of households in the streets around Stratford, based on Census 2021. For a flat, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For a flat near Stratford (London) station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Sutton House, about 2.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Evangelist, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
